शैलेन्द्र महतो
शैलेन्द्र महतो को झारखंड का ‘व्यास’ कहा जाता है, जिस तरह महाभारत के रचयिता को ‘व्यास’ कहा गया है। श्री महतो का जन्म 11 अक्टूबर 1953 को झारखंड के तत्कालीन अविभाजित सिंहभूम जिले के चक्रधरपुर थाना अन्तर्गत सेताहाका गाँव में हुआ था। माता– लुधीरानी महतो और पिता का नाम रविचरण महतो था। 1973 में मात्र बीस वर्ष की उम्र में राजनीतिक जीवन की शुरुआत की और झारखंड आंदोलन का हिस्सा बने। 1978 में झारखंड मुक्ति मोर्चा में शामिल होकर झारखंडी अस्मिता और उनका गौरव-सम्मान, जल-जंगल-जमीन के अधिकार के लम्बे झारखंड आंदोलन में शैलेन्द्र महतो की अग्रणी भूमिका रही है। ज्ञातव्य है कि 25 नवंबर 1978 को गोइलकेरा प्रखंड अंतर्गत सेरेंगदा हाट मैदान में पुलिस फायरिंग से शैलेंद्र महतो बच गए थे और तीन व्यक्ति शहीद हो गए। इसके बाद श्री महतो झारखंड आंदोलन के एक प्रमुख नेता के रूप में सामने आए। सरकार ने इन्हें आंदोलन के दौरान जिन्दा या मुर्दा गिरफ्तार करने के लिए दस हजार रुपये इनाम घोषित कर रखा था। 1987 में झारखंड मुक्ति मोर्चा के महासचिव बने। श्री महतो की राजनीति के अलावा लेखन में भी शुरू से रुचि रही है, और सम-सामयिक विषयों पर पत्र-पत्रिकाओं में उनके लेख प्रकाशित होते रहे हैं। राजीव गाँधी सरकार द्वारा गठित ‘झारखंड विषयक समिति’ के सदस्य रहे और झामुमो से 9वीं एवं 10वीं लोकसभा में जमशेदपुर के सांसद बने। बाद में उन्होंने 1996 में झामुमो छोड़कर झारखंड राज्य हासिल करने के लिए रांची में आहुत एक विशाल जनसभा में अटल बिहारी वाजपेयी के समक्ष भाजपा में शामिल हुए। इनकी पत्‍नी आभा महतो 12वीं और 13वीं लोकसभा में भाजपा से जमशेदपुर की सांसद बनीं। शैलेन्द्र महतो द्वारा रचित पुस्तक ‘झारखंड की समरगाथा’ की समीक्षा लेख में राँची विश्‍वविद्यालय के ‘जनजाति एवं क्षेत्रीय भाषा विभाग‘ के पूर्व प्रोफेसर डॉ. वी.पी. केसरी ने लेखक को झारखंड का ‘व्यास’ की उपाधि दी है। उनकी प्रकाशित पुस्तकें– (1) झारखंड राज्य और उपनिवेशवाद (1989); (2) देश और द‍ृष्‍टि (1999); (3) झारखंड की समरगाथा (2011); (4) Journey of Jharkhand Movement (2022)। (5) झारखंड में विद्रोह का इतिहास, 1767-1947 (संस्करण, 2025 )।

Shailendra Mahto
Shailendra Mahto, a former Member of Parliament, has been a pioneer in the statehood movement of Jharkhand. Born to Smt Ludhirani and Rabi Charan Mahto in Setahaka village near Chakradharpur on October 11, 1953, he jumped into statehood movement at a young age of twenty. He joined Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, the political party that spearheaded statehood movement, in 1978 and rose to become its general secretary in 1987. As a leader of the people aspiring for separate political identity, he always remained on the forefront, dreading lathis and guns of the police. From 1978 to 1983, he led the jal, jungal, jameen movement and Great Jharkhand Movement, during which he had to journey through several incidents of police firing like those of Ichahatu, Serengda, Gua, Sarjomhatu, Jojohatu, Baipi etc. The police firing killed many of his close revolutionary friends. He went to jail several times during the statehood movement. Shailendra Mahto was a Member of Committee on Jharkhand Matters that was formed by Rajiv Gandhi government in August 1989. He was the Member in the 9th and 10th Lok Sabha from Jamshedpur, the Steel City of Jharkhand. In 1996, he joined the BJP for separate statehood of Jharkhand, under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Abha Mahto, wife of Shailendra Mahto later represented the constituency in the Loka Sabha in the 12th and 13th Lok Sabha. Shailendra Mahto keeps keen interest in reading and writing, particularly on matters related to Jharkhand and people of Jharkhand. He has authored three books previously: Jharkhand Rajya aur Upniveshvad, Desh aur Drishti, and Jharkhand Ki Samargatha. The present book “Journey of Jharkhand Movement” is a milestone.
